Guernsey
Guernsey is the second largest of the Channel Islands, which sit just off the
coast of northwest France. Although much closer to France than to the UK, the
islands are British and the language spoken is English. The currency is Sterling,
even though Guernsey produces its own bank notes and coins bearing different
designs. British currency is freely accepted.
There are regular daily flights to and from main UK airports many of which take less than an hour.
Guernsey has a population of around 59,000. The climate if generally a little warmer then that in the south of England and similar to that of northern Europe.
STATES OF GUERNSEY BOARD OF HEALTH
The healthcare system in Guernsey is run along very different lines from that
in the UK, although staff are trained in the same way and the proportion of
qualified staff is greater than that normally found in UK Health Trusts. There
is no NHS. Three general practices provide family doctor services on a private
basis. There is one specialist practice, which includes general surgery, general
medicine, obstetrics and orthopaedics. The specialists and most GPs have access
to hospital facilities. The Specialist Health Insurance Scheme covers all.
