Northern Lights come to Ireland

The Aurora Borealis better known as the Northern Lights hit Irish shores this month. The Northern Lights rarely stray this far south preferring to stick around the North Pole. So it’s something of a rare treat for all the stargazers in the country…and well anyone who likes to look at pretty lights in the sky.

The mystical and otherworldly glow of greens, purples and the occasional red dancing across the sky have fascinated people for thousands of years. The name Aurora Borealis means dawn of the north. In medieval times in Europe, it was thought the lights were a forewarning of war and famine, while others believe the lights were the spirits of their departed loved ones. The colour of the aurora is dependent on the how many miles above the earth the collisions occur and with what gas particle. The most common colour of the aurora is green. And while we can now explain the Northern Lights as charged particles from the sun colliding with gas(mainly air) particles in the atmosphere, the beauty and magic of them remain. As you stare at the colourful night sky, it is easy to imagine a world full of magic, mystery and mythology. The Northern Lights bring out our inner child and as we stare in awe, we can for those brief few minutes revert back to our youth where magic is real and the world is full of mystical magical creatures and adventures.
