On June 6th the Olympic Flame comes to Dublin. Ireland will become the only country outside of Greece and the UK to host the 2012 Olympic Flame. 41 torch bearers will carry the historic flame through the streets of Dublin on its short visit. Olympic Organisers have said that the flame coming to Dublin will show “the short, symbolic visit will reflect the success of the peace process and the all island make-up of the Irish team”  (http://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/sport/40-to-carry-olympic-flame-in-dublin-550806.html)
As the flame crosses the border between North and South; a short ceremony will be held. The handover will be done by two legendary Irish boxing greats Wayne McCullough from Belfast and Michael Carruth from Dublin. President Michael D. Higgins will welcome the first torch bearer in Howth in a small ceremony held outside the offices of the  Olympic Council. the convoy will include a miner’s lamp, containing the original Olympic Flame from its home in Olympia Greece. The relay team will consist of some of Ireland’s most famous sports and national heroes; including Ronnie Delaney, paralympian Anna Ebbs, Shane Horgan, Paul McGrath, Kenny Egan, suicide prevention worker Joan Freeman and John Collins who will represent the Traveller Community. http://www.visitdublin.com/event/Olympic_Torch_visits_Dublin). The torch will pass by several historic sites in the city including the Garden of Remembrance, GPO, Custom House, St.Patrick’s Cathedral, Christchurch, to name but a few before finishing at St.Stephen’s Green.
