Job description

Paediatric Senior Staff Nurse (SSN)        

Job Purpose:Lead the clinical and operational activities and ensure the provision of optimum clinical care, customer satisfaction and patient safety per Hospital policies and standards. Responsible for the implementation and delivery of age appropriate patient care and customer satisfaction, that is congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the Organization. Responsible for ensuring nursing staff adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice of the regulatory body.

Main Responsibilities

  • Deputizes for the Charge Nurse in their absence to ensure that there is planned, effective, day- to-day skill mix and staff management.
  • Assists in preparation of performance evaluations and the ongoing clinical evaluation of all staff.
  • Participates in the provision of continuing education for staff, task forces that are interdisciplinary or interdepartmental; may be required to chair, co-chair or lead such groups.
  • Resolves unit related matters, involving customer complaints or advising and/or counselling staff; refers to Charge Nurse or Nursing Administrative designate as appropriate.
  • Provides a welcoming work environment for new staff/nursing students and ensures appropriate preceptors are made available to assist with orientation. Monitors and tracks individual progress. Mentors and precepts new staff as required.
  • Supports the recruitment of staff on unit, encourages, and promotes the retention of all staff to meet the unit specific turnover rate goal.
  • Maintains supply inventory. Initiates maintenance action and follows up on equipment failures.
  • Implements policies and procedures for the unit; contributes to writing, reviewing, and/or revising annually as part of professional practice framework.
  • Addresses the immediate legal and ethical dilemmas in a professional, collaborative manner and refers to the relevant person for action.
  • Contributes to the achievement of clinical quality outcome indicators and patient satisfaction on unit and supports professional practice model.
  • Contributes to organizational efficiency improvements.

Job Requirement
  • Bachelor of Science degree in nursing or equivalent qualification of NLT
  • Six (6) years nursing experience as a registered nurse (RN), and with atleast two (2) years of acute clinical experience in aPaediatric hospital.
