International Nurses’s Day 2020

May 12, 2020/in Events, Nursing /by CCM

International Nurses’ Day is dedicated to celebrating the work and contribution of nurses in society. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated International Nurses day since 1965. In January 1974, the decision was made to celebrate the day on 12 May as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing. Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses’ Day Kit. The kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Nurses_Day )

To celebrate this international nurse’s day, we’ve gathered testimonials from nurses across the globe who have made the move to work overseas. Read their stories below.

Nursing as a profession is a passport to the world, an international profession. While moving overseas to work as a nurse can be a daunting experience, it can also be an adventure, a way to expand your horizons and experience a new culture and way of life.

You might not be able to travel right now but you can do research and dream. Make sure nursing overseas is the right move for you. Moving overseas can provide a great opportunity for both personal and professional development.

For the next month, each week we’ll be sharing new testimonials from nurses giving you an insight into their experience of working overseas. For now, we just want to say Thank YOU, for all work you are doing today and every day. Be Well, Be Safe, Be Careful

Fight against Covid-19 Researchers believe BCG Vaccine promising

April 8, 2020/in Events, Uncategorized /by CCM

Currently there is no known treatment for the coronavirus that emerged in China late last year which has since spread across the planet. The present time-frame for the creation and approval of a vaccine is 12 to 18 months. Researchers from China published the genetic sequence of the virus in Mid-January in the hopes of finding a vaccine/cure, researchers across the globe began working in earnest to find effective drugs. Research has split into three different avenues of approach – some are looking at the effects of existing drugs as a treatment, others are experimenting to recycle common drugs for use, while others are using cutting-edge technology to devise new types of vaccines. https://www.thejournal.ie/coronavirus-vaccine-2-5062925-Apr2020/

As the healthcare workers around the world continue their fight against Covid – 19 compelling evidence is emerging that the BCG Vaccine might helpprotect against Covid-19. Studies are beginning to show countries with vaccination programmes that include BCG have fewer cases. The evidence suggests that it may provide protection against Covid- 19 and significantly reduce death rates. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/coronavirus-more-striking-evidence-bcg-vaccine-might-protect-against-covid-19-1.4222110

In 1908 French scientists began developing the tuberculosis vaccine “Bacillus Calmette-Guerin” (BCG), the first human trials began in 1921. The BCG is named after the two bacteriologists involved: Albert Calmette and Camille Guerin. Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by bacteria attacking the lungs, while infection is a result of by being in close contact with an infected person when they sneeze or cough. TB was especially common after World War II and is highly infectious. It infects 10 million people every year with 1.5 million people dying from it, according to WHO, in spite of it being a preventable and curable disease. https://www.euronews.com/2020/04/06/has-the-key-to-a-coronoavirus-vaccine-been-staring-us-in-the-face-for-a-century

In a study comprised of 178 countries conducted by an Irish Medical Consultant and epidemiologists at the University of Texas in Houston evidence shows countries with vaccination programmes have lower coronavirus cases by a factor 10, compared to countries where BCG programmes are no longer active. This lower case numbers translates “into a death rate up-to 20 times less, according to urologist Paul Hegarty of the Mater Hospital, Dublin. “ https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/coronavirus-more-striking-evidence-bcg-vaccine-might-protect-against-covid-19-1.4222110

The study is expected to be published shortly by PLOS journal, and is largely a statistical one with cautions because of the possibility of confounding factors. Research suggests “Over the 15 days, incidence of Covid-19 was 38 per million in countries with BCG vaccination whereas the incidence of Covid-19 was 358 per million in the absence of such a programme. The death rate was 4.28 per million in countries with BCG programmes and 40 per million in countries without such a programme,” he added.” https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/coronavirus-more-striking-evidence-bcg-vaccine-might-protect-against-covid-19-1.4222110

So what do scientist know about the TB vaccine, what are they trying to figure and its place in the fight against Covid- 19

HOW CAN A TB VACCINE HELP WITH OTHER INFECTIONS?

The BCG vaccine generates an adaptive immune response, i.e. the body develops a defence against a specific microorganism/pathogen after exposure to it. Most vaccines create an adaptive immune response to a single pathogen. The BCG vaccine however may also boost the natural immune system which is the first-line defence against infection and disease.

WHAT SCIENTISTS DO NOT KNOW

They don’t have data yet on the effect of BCG vaccination has on the virus. Since the BCG vaccine has many varieties with different capabilities they also need to identify the type of BCG vaccine that would be most effective in boosting the natural immune system.

World Health Day 2020

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt within the heart.- Helen Keller

World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7 April and has been since 1950. Each year a specific theme is chosen. In 2020, the theme is to support nurses and midwives with the aim of shining a spotlight on their work, a reminder of the critical role they play in healthcare. https://www.who.int/news-room/campaigns/world-health-day/world-health-day-2020

This year healthcare workers are on the front-line COVID-19 response, they are at the forefront at this crucial time in world history. This is a global battle on an international scale, never before witnessed. Their critical role in society has been never more been highlighted and seen by the public at large. They as a profession are providing high quality care, providing advise and reassurance to those in their communities and offering comfort to those afflicted by the virus.

So on this day dedicated to honouring and thanking Healthcare Workers we say Thank you for all your hard work today and everyday.

Be well, Be safe, Be Careful.

Happy International Nurses Day 2019

May 10, 2019/in Events, Nursing /by CCM

Always thank your nurse. Sometimes the only one between you and a hearse. ~ Carrie Latet

International Nurses Day is a chance to commemorate nursing and the contribution that nurses make in improving the lives of individuals and their families. Not to mention the impact they have on the health and well-being of whole communities and the wider population. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated International Nurses day since 1965. This year’s theme is Nurses: A voice to lead – Health for All

In January 1974, the decision was made to celebrate the day on 12 May as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing. Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses’ Day Kit. The kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Nurses_Day#cite_note-1)

The U.S. and Canada celebrate their National Nursing Week each year from 9 to 15 May each year. It was established in the U.S. by President Richard Nixon in 1974. The Canadian Minister of Health instituted National Nursing Week in Canada in 1985. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Nurses_Day#cite_note-1)

Happy St.Patrick’s Day

March 15, 2019/in Events /by CCM

May the wind always be at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

and rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand

(Irish Blessing)

St Patrick the patron saint of Ireland, the subject of legends; famous for driving the snakes out of Ireland, which is thought to be symbolic of the ending of pagan worship in Ireland.

Saint Patrick’s Day is associated with everything Irish: anything green, white and gold, from shamrocks to pots of gold. For those who celebrate its intended religious meaning, St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally a spiritual day, a day of renewal. Since the holiday began in Ireland and as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history, their culture, and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. All over the world big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, “wearing of the green,” music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, colouring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

People throughout Ireland from the banks of the Liffey to the Hills of Donegal, to the distant shores or the faraway lands where many have gone to find their fortune both past and present, hold parades and festivals that celebrate the Irish culture. Local musicians perform during the parades, from street corners to barstools. St. Patrick’s Day festivals illustrate an atmosphere of the famous Irish welcome and warmth; bringing a little piece of the Motherland to the millions of Irish emigrants and diaspora who find themselves thinking of home.

They say everyone who appreciates Ireland and the Irish becomes an Honorary Irishman on 17th March with this in mind, the Staff and Management of CCM Recruitment International (a 100% Irish company) are taking this opportunity to wish you, A Very Happy Patricks Day

Whether you’re in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, London, Melbourne or other, the global recognition of St Patricks Day will bring together friends, colleagues and new faces from around the world. So where will you be celebrating this year?  And while considering your future, where would you like to be when you celebrate next year?

Happy Pancake Tuesday – Did You Know?

March 5, 2019/in Events /by CCM

Shrove Tuesday (technically its correct name) is more commonly known as Pancake Tuesday and is the first day of Lent. Today was traditionally used to get rid of s foods i.e. flour, eggs, sugar (also known as nice things), meat as well was used up during this time. These foods were usually restricted or given up entirely during the 40 days of lent. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday)

Bet You Didn’t Know This

  • The first pancake recipe that appeared in an English cookbook was in the 15th century.
  • According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “flat as a pancake”, has been a catchphrase since at least 1611.
  • The highest pancake toss ever measured was 9.47 meters, or 31 feet 1 inch. It was done by Dominic Cuzzacrea at the Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga, New York, United States, on November 13, 2010.
  • The most flips that anyone has done with a pancake was 349 flips in two minutes, which was done by Dean Gould at Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1995. (Hats off to anyone who can beat that!)
  • The most people tossing pancakes was 890 and it was achieved at an event organized by the University of Sheffield in Sheffield, United Kingdom, in 2012.
  • The Guinness World Record for the most pancakes served in 8 hours by a team is 34,818. (http://tonsoffacts.com/26-fun-interesting-facts-pancakes/)
  • Pancake Races actually exist. Olney in Buckinghamshire has one of the oldest dating back to 1445. It’s said to have originated when a housewife was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for mass. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake. The races still happen today. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday
