Job Overview: Our client is seeking a Midwife to join their team. Provide exceptional patient driven care in a wellness environment.  It is a 300-bed teaching Hospital under the auspices of the Ministry of Education.   It serves a University faculty, students, and the community.  A secondary hospital for both adults and children, it provides services through ambulatory care and in-patient care. It has 3 centres of excellence:

  • Child Development
  • Women’s Health
  • Adolescent Health


Job Summary: Primary Duties:

  • Coordinate’s patient care amongst multidisciplinary team members and documents in the patient medical record.
  • Completes all nursing documentation (Obstetric assessments, partogram, parturition, new-born identification, ongoing nursing assessment notes accurately and legibly and understands the importance and relevance of their confidential nature).
  • Communicates and provides accurate and complete information through established verbal and written reports and handover such as ongoing assessment, nursing care plans and other relevant obstetrical nursing notes to be followed.
  • To maintain high standard of care both normal and abnormal labours including induction and suppression of labour using prostaglandins, oxytocin, Misoprostil, and Tocolytics medications and to be familiar with the appropriate standing orders.
  • Competent in intravenous cannulation and blood extraction.
  • To conduct normal deliveries in low-risk pregnancies with vertex presentation and be competent in performing and suturing episiotomies as required or ask resident on duty for assistance to suture if complicated.
  • Competent in the infiltration of the perineum with local anaesthetic and suturing of 1st and 2nd degree tears. Third and fourth degree laceration refer to obstetrician for repair.
  • Perform non-stress test by cardiotocograph (CTG) and interpret, diagnose and report abnormalities of the Non-Stress Test (NST) to the obstetrician for management and intervention.
  • Recognises high risks pregnancies and obstetrical emergencies and refer to obstetrician for appropriate intervention and liaise with Team leader and Nurse Manager.
  • Recognises warning signs of abnormality in the mother and infant and summons medical assistance and liaise with the Nurse Manager.
  • Assist obstetrician with complicated deliveries and other obstetric procedures e.g. Ventouse or Shoulder Dystocia.
  • Participate in unit management and takes charge of shifts and operational management of the unit as required.
  • Recognise and anticipate problems or needs of the unit staff and patients and provide appropriate intervention.
  • Liaise with obstetric team and report progress or abnormal findings with documentation and inform Nurse Manager.
  • Participates in QI & PS activities for improvement of patient care and assist in data collection of the KPI’s for the quality improvement and monitoring.
  • Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned by the director of nursing or designee within the realm of knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Participates in continuing education activities, self-directed learning activities, and attends nursing and interdisciplinary forums and conferences
  • Participates in the process of assessing, planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating the educational needs reflecting concerns for cultural, religious and educational differences of patient population at all levels of the organization
  • Participates in the formal and informal performance appraisal processes including self-appraisal, peer review and 360 for nurses.
  • Maintains the safety & infection control policies and ensures that all accidents / incidents / safety events are reported to Nursing Manager

Experience and Education Requirements
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing with post graduate Degree in Midwifery OR Midwifery Degree
  • Minimum two (2) years post graduate experience
  • Recent/Current experience of not less than two years in Midwifery
  • Current Nursing Registration from country of origin
  • BLS
