Job Overview: Our client is seeking an Ophthalmology (Internal Medicine) Staff Nurse to join their team.  The Hospital provides high quality tertiary ophthalmic care and promotes expanded Kingdom-wide eye care through its outreach, educational, and research programs.  The hospital has 229 inpatient beds, 15 operating rooms, an outpatient clinic with more than 50 examination lanes, and a large emergency room that works 24 hours/7 days a week for urgent eye treatment. The Department of Ophthalmology offers tertiary ophthalmic services through its subspecialty divisions, which include Anterior Segment, Glaucoma, Vitreo-Retina, Pediatric Ophthalmology/Strabismus, Oculoplastics/Orbit, Neuro-Ophthalmology and Uveitis. Delivers direct patient care; provides clinical supervision when acting as relief Charge Nurse; assesses and anticipates patient's health needs and applies interventions based on specialized knowledge and skills; promotes and restores patient's health by completing the nursing process; collaborating with Physicians and multi-disciplinary team members; providing physical and psychological support to patients and family members; functions as a role model for RN II positions in the implementation of the nursing process.

Job Summary: Primary Duties:

  • Recognize potential emergency situations; code blue or other emergency situations are managed competently. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills required to provide independent functions during "after hours" and "on call" duty.                
  • Upholds the standards of the International Council for Nurses - Code of Ethics; seeks assistance from CN I Nursing Manager to identify difficult ethical situations.        
  • Acts as a role model to the RN II position for all aspects of the nursing process. Consults/seeks advice from the CN in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care of patients with complex nursing care needs.                
  • Obtains a comprehensive and systematic nursing assessment on admission and as required, based on subjective and objective findings. Nursing diagnosis is made based on clinical data and specialized knowledge that identifies high-risk patients, patients with special needs and patients with potential problems.                    
  • Sets priorities and plans implementation of patient care; implementation of care is completed in a timely, organized manner and follows hospital nursing standards and P&Ps. Activities of daily living e.g. hygiene needs are supported.                
  • Incorporates discharge or home care planning into the multidisciplinary plan of care from admission to discharge on an ongoing basis. Works proactively and throughout patient / family stay to assure timely discharge. Nursing care plans are modified as necessary. All documentation related to discharge and transfer are completed in a timely manner.    
  • Continuously evaluate care plans as required and regular patient rounds are completed and patient requests for assistance are responded to in a timely manner.            
  • Provides accurate and complete reports in a timely manner on patient care problems to the in-coming shift, Charge Nurse, Nursing Manager and Physician. Collaborates effectively as a multidisciplinary team member.                    
  • Nursing documentation is informative, complete, accurate, concise and legible. Documentation follows hospital standards and reflects the nursing process from assessment through evaluation. Patient records are reviewed for deficiencies as per unit protocols.    
  • Identifies learning needs of patients / families and teaches by adapting standard information to provide individualized and comprehensive teaching - learning. Utilizes available resources as appropriate to meet identified patient, family and / or caregiver needs and evaluates the teaching provided with detailed documentation in the electronic patient record.        
  • Establishes an in-depth data base by assessing the behavioural and physiologic status of the patient by utilizing interview, observation, physical examination and other available data. Implements safe, competent and efficient patient and family care within the policies and procedures, standards and interventions as noted on the multidisciplinary plan of care. Procedures and treatments are explained to the patient using an Interpreter as required.
  • Integrates nursing interventions into the multidisciplinary plan of care, incorporating appropriate standards of care and practice into patient outcomes.            
  • Contributes to the learning experience of both patients, family members and Colleagues.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of patient and family teaching sessions with appropriate documentation on the electronic patient record.                    
  • Provides efficient and effective peri-operative nursing care by assessing, planning and implementing nursing care patients receive before, during and after surgery.        
  • Participates in departmental quarterly instruments' inventory.                
  • Performs all duties in a professional, effective and confidential manner.            
  • Demonstrates an understanding of environmental safety, Health Promotion, maintenance, infection control standards and related policies and procedures. Demonstrates familiarity with the hospital's Environment of Care (EOG) program including fire and general safety procedures.  
  • Applies infection control standards in practice; maintains a clean and safe environment of care. Completes daily environmental monitoring as assigned to ensure that standards are met.    
  • Takes appropriate actions to ensure compliance with Environment of Care (EOC) requirements.    
  • Performs duties with minimal supervision; accepts accountability for decisions and actions. Accepts the responsibilities of higher position if assigned.    
  • Functions as a role model to all levels of staff; acts as a preceptor I resource for new employees and staff to the department.                    
  • Makes suggestions for change and process improvement. Participates in staff meetings and quality management activities.                    
  • Demonstrates a positive approach to professional interpersonal relationships; maintains effective relationships with all levels of staff. Resolves conflicts in a constructive manner.
  • Functions effectively as a team member; takes responsibility for and completes assigned duties. Makes suggestions for improving the team's productivity. Helps the team resolve differences of opinion; implements changes the team has agreed to make.        
  • Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences among patients, visitors and colleagues; demonstrates tolerance and sensitivity to cultural differences.        
  • Participates in own performance assessment and identifies areas for professional and personal development; seeks opportunities for development through cross training, in-service and continuing education. Accepts and acts on constructive feedback related to development.            
  • Demonstrates understanding and awareness of position responsibilities, accountability and authority.                    
  • Actively supports positive change; identifies problems and seeks solutions in a constructive manner.

Experience and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor Degree or Diploma in Nursing, minimum 3 years duration
  • Current licensure (RN) with a nursing governing body from the employee's country of origin.
  • Min two (4) years acute hospital nursing experience.
  • Two (2) years of which was spent in Medical/Surgical/Paediatric/Operating Room/Post Anaesthesia Recovery Room/High Dependency Unit Emergency Room areas (Desirable.)
