Job Overview: Our client is seeking a Head Nurse Ambulatory Care (Inpatient) to join their team. The Hospital provides high quality tertiary ophthalmic care and promotes expanded Kingdom-wide eye care through its outreach, educational, and research programs.  The hospital has 229 inpatient beds, 15 operating rooms, an outpatient clinic with more than 50 examination lanes, and a large emergency room that works 24 hours/7 days a week for urgent eye treatment. The Department of Ophthalmology offers tertiary ophthalmic services through its subspecialty divisions, which include Anterior Segment, Glaucoma, Vitreo-Retina, Pediatric Ophthalmology/Strabismus, Oculoplastics/Orbit, Neuro-Ophthalmology and Uveitis. The Post Holder will be responsible for the management of all personnel and resources in assigned areas. Coordinates activities among the multi-disciplinary team. Functions as a role model for all unit personnel. Relieves the Unit Manager, as required. Provides input regarding financial, human and materials management.



Job Summary: Primary Duties:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of inventory management and Hospital supply issues.    
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills required to coordinate, supervise and participate in OPS practice and resources management activities. Activities are implemented in a proactive and organized manner that indicates informed critical thinking skills and ability to prioritise.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills required to recognize challenges on patient service and emergency situations and proactively managing them.        
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills required in recognizing potential emergency situations. Code Blue or other emergency situations are managed completely.        
  • Upholds the standards of the International Council for Nurses - Code of Ethics. Supports nursing staff in difficult ethical situations. Seeks assistance from Senior Nursing Management to deal with complex ethical and cultural issues.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills required to assume supervision of the unit.    
  • Sets priorities and plans implementation of daily activities, ensures implementation is completed in a timely organized manner, following hospital standards. Coordinate’s anticipated patient flow with Charge Nurse.                    
  • Directs and supervises activities in planning for special needs and services requests. Serves as a resource person for P&P, standards, correct use, and operation of equipment. Acts as a role model through direct participation in clinic processes during peak activity periods, for staff development needs and during emergencies.                    
  • Evaluates work practices on an ongoing basis and works with Clinical Instructors to ensure continuing competency.                    
  • Documentation is informative, complete and follows hospital standards. Records are reviewed for deficiencies as per unit protocols.                    
  • Participates in nursing services strategic and operational planning. Engages with Nursing Unit Manager to identify immediate and long-range objectives and strategies for unit/ area. Develops operational plans and strategies for implementation. Supports the implementation of nursing services-wide programs.                    
  • Supports the Nursing Unit Manager in preparing the unit budget in accordance with hospital requirements. Identifies capital equipment needs in a timely manner, participates in the selection of capital equipment, as requested.                    
  • Participates with the Nursing Unit Manager in interviewing and selecting staff, according to area requirements and nursing services recruitment/ promotion process.        
  • Coordinates new employee orientation. Assesses staff strengths and development needs. Participates in staff performance appraisal. Shares knowledge and skills, coordinates in- services and education activities.                    
  • Ensures continuing professional development of staff. Coordinates ongoing staff performance evaluation, which identifies performance issues, providing effective and timely feedback with developmental plans and performance appraisals being completed in a timely and objective manner.
  • Demonstrates equity and fairness in managing staff issues. Implements corrective actions in a fair and consistent manner and in accordance with Hospital P&P, following with discussion with the Nursing Unit Manager.                    
  • In coordination with the Nursing Unit Manager, plans and develops staffing schedules, which should reflect appropriate numbers, skills mix, educational activities, special assignment and requests. Coordinates staff rotation with Charge Nurse and submits completed schedule three (3) months prior to commencement.                    
  • Contributes as a member of the unit management team. Attends unit management meetings, to review clinical, technical, and resource management issues, submits regular unit activity report. Attends ad-hoc Charge Nurse Meetings with Nursing Administration.       
  • Participates in department-wide performance improvement activities. Applies quality management strategies in unit / area. Initiates investigation in areas of concern and takes action for improvement.                    
  • Participates in revision of policies, procedures, and systems. Participates in accreditation mock surveys. Collects and reports unit-based and service-wide performance indicators.    
  • Participates in nursing research/data collection activities, coordinates changes to practice- based on evidence-based research. Encourages staff to continually update knowledge of current nursing/ technical research and practice.                    
  • Demonstrates an understanding of environmental safety, Health Promotion, maintenance, infection control standards and related policies and procedures. Demonstrates familiarity with the hospital's Environment of Care (EOC) program including fire and general safety procedures.    
  • Applies infection control standards in practice; maintains a clean and safe environment of care. Completes daily environmental monitoring as assigned to ensure that standards are met.    
  • Performs duties with minimal supervision; accepts accountability for decisions and actions. Accepts the responsibilities of higher position if assigned.        
  • Functions as a role model to all levels of staff; acts as a preceptor /resource for new employees and staff to the department.                    
  • Makes suggestions for change and process improvement. Participates in staff meetings and quality management activities.                    
  • Demonstrates a positive approach to professional interpersonal relationships; maintains effective relationships with all levels of staff. Resolves conflicts in a constructive manner.
  • Functions effectively as a team member; takes responsibility for and completes assigned duties. Makes suggestions for improving the team 's productivity. Helps the team resolve differences of opinion; implements changes the team has agreed to make.        
  • Uses communication channels appropriately; follows the chain of command discussing issues with the immediate Supervisor first. Communicates in a clear, accurate and timely manner.    
  • Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences among patients, visitors and colleagues; demonstrates tolerance and sensitivity to cultural differences.    
  • Participates in own performance assessment and identifies areas for professional and personal development; seeks opportunities for development through cross training, in-service and continuing education. Accepts and acts on constructive feedback related to development.

Experience and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor 's Degree Nursing 
  • Minimum of six (6) years working experience in acute care setting, four (4) years of which is in ambulatory care/outpatient setting in a level of Charge Nurse, Head Nurse or Assistant Head Nurse position and/or demonstrates leadership qualities during relief Charge Nurse assignments 
  • Current License as a Registered Nurse (RN) from country of Professional practice 
  • Basic Life Support        
  • ACLS        
  • PALS
  • Computer literate and familiar with MS-Office programs and applications 
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, negotiation, communication and conflict resolution skills and an ability to liaise on complex issues.
