Job Overview: Our client is seeking a Charge Nurse - Paed Surgical ICU to join their team. Provides supervision and support for the Paediatric cardiology or cardiac surgery critical care team during each span of duty.  Responsible for maintaining the highest standards of clinical care.  Responsible for performing duties of ward manager in the absence of the Head Nurse.

Job Summary: Primary Duties:

  • Ensures through his/her actions, either directly or indirectly, that a superior quality of nursing care, compassion and understanding is given to every patient served at the Hospital
  • Acts as a role model in providing safe and high-quality patient care.
  • Provides ongoing supervision of clinical care and is accountable for own professional actions during each span of duty.
  • Maintains a safe and comfortable environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Ensures that Physician orders are carried out, clarifying any areas of uncertainty.
  • Supports the Head Nurse in the maintenance of high standards of nursing care.
  • Ensures an effective handover of all duties and required information at shift change.
  • Ensures confidentiality, legibility and accuracy of patients’ nursing records, charts and other documentation.
  • Demonstrates advanced paediatric and critical care cardiac nursing clinical skills and knowledge and acts as a resource person for nurses in the unit.
  • Maintains effective communication skills with team members, patients and visitors.
  • Provides direct patient care and other nursing duties as necessary.
  • Provides supervision and support of nursing team during each span of duty.
  • Liaises with medical staff to ensure appropriate patient care.
  • Orders and ensures availability of supplies and staff resources according to unit requirements.
  • Reviews practices and policies and recommends improvements as needed.
  • Manages and reports all incidents to the Head Nurse. Investigates as required.
  • Provides ward management cover as Acting Head Nurse when allocated.
  • Participates in unit and hospital CQI&PS activities.
  • Participates in Unit/Nursing Dept organized activities/committees.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in making decisions. Is proactive in solving problems.
  • Maintains an environment conducive to education, staff development and training.
  • Teaches other members of the nursing team and assists in their professional development. Orientates new staff members in the ward.
  • Open to new ideas raised by staff for the benefit of the ward, patients and/or staff.
  • Motivates departmental staff by effectively leading, directing and motivating employees to perform to the best of their abilities.
  • Conducts staff performance evaluations to review employee work performance.
  • Conducts counselling meetings when required, in consultation with the Head Nurse.
  • Participates in promotion and recruitment interviews as requested by the Head Nurse.

Experience and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor Degree or Diploma in Nursing, minimum 3 years duration 
  • Current licensure (RN) with a nursing governing body from the employee’s country of origin.
  • BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Post graduate qualification in Paediatric OR Cardiac Critical Care Nursing. (Desirable)
  • Four (4) years recent work experience in a adult cardiac critical care area, with two (2) additional years of experience as a Senior Staff Nurse or Charge Nurse.
